Kia today released sketches of the all-new Niro, a “Hybrid Utility Vehicle” (HUV) that will go on sale in 2016. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Kia introduced the Niro concept at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.

According to the company, the Niro will maintain all the practicality and appeal of a compact SUV, while offering greater fuel economy. Its all-new platform is designed to accommodate a specific set of environmentally-conscious technologies and next-generation powertrains.

Aesthetically, the Kia Niro looks sporty and aerodynamic while integrating the brand’s signature “Tiger Nose” grille. Other design elements will later be applied to the rest of the lineup. Under the hood is a 104-horsepower 1.6L gasoline engine mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. A 32kW electric motor and 1.56kWh lithium-polymer battery complete the package.

The time and location of the Niro’s public debut remain unknown. Production will start in late 2016.

In related news, Kia plans to offer 11 green models by 2020 compared to just four at the moment.
