Mercedes-Benz will launch the S 400 BlueHYBRID at the 2008 Mondial de l'Automobile de Paris scheduled for October 2 to 19.

This high-end hybrid sedan is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 kicking out 279 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque. Combined with the electric engine, the output jumps to 299 hp and the torque to 283 lb-ft. Mercedes-Benz has equipped its BlueHYBRID with a 7-speed automatic transmission.

The job of the BlueHYBRID's electric engine is to assist the combustion engine by lending a hand during acceleration manoeuvres. It also serves as a generator, recharging the lithium ion batteries when braking. These batteries are located under the hood, so they don't affect the passenger or cargo space of the sedan.

The vehicle also features idle stop, which means the combustion engine is automatically shut down when the vehicle stops moving. The electric engine is in charge of restarting the car.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the S 400 BlueHYBRID's average fuel consumption is 7.9 L/100 km. Comparatively, its future rival, the Lexus LS 600h L, is rated at 9.9 L/100 km.

The S 400 BlueHYBRID will be available in the summer of 2009. Mercedes-Benz hasn't mentioned when it'll make it to North America.
