Detroit - Michelin announced the winning entries of the annual Michelin Design Competition coming from Detroit's College for Creative Studies (CCS) on January 12, 2009. Three CCS transportation students, one of which is a Canadian, received a total of six awards, scholarship monies and an invitation to display their winning designs in a special Michelin exhibit at the 2009 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

The winners are: Dong Tran, age 25, from Cicero, NY (1st for Vehicle Design and Tire and Wheel Concept); James Tabujura, age 29, from Mississauga, Ontario (2nd for Vehicle Design and 3rd for Tire and Wheel Concept); and finally, Filip Bosevski, age 22, from Bitola in the Republic of Macedonia (3rd for Vehicle Design and 2nd for Tire and Wheel Concept).

Thirteen senior-level students entered this year's challenge in early December, each creating a vehicle design and a tire/wheel assembly they could envision driving in 2019 using the theme "BRAVE+BOLD, America's Next Iconic Vehicle." The winning CCS students' work joined 35 other designs representing 19 different countries selected in the global Michelin Challenge Design competition at the auto show.

"Design, creativity and innovation are deeply woven into the fabric of Michelin," said Tom Chubb, vice president of marketing for Michelin Automotive Industry Division. "The transportation industry is facing some important challenges ahead and sponsoring global and local programs like Michelin Challenge Design and CCS inspires the next generation to pursue an automotive career and helps them find a better way forward."

Judges for this year's event included Ford Design Director, Pat Schiavone; Christopher Webb and Magdalena Kokozynska from General Motors Design and Scott Anderson, formerly from Chrysler Design.

Michelin presented the first-place winners with $1,250 scholarships. Second-place winners received $1,000 scholarships, and third-place winners earned $750 scholarships. All participants received $350 for entering the competition. In addition, the tire company also made a $35,550 donation that provides financial aid to CCS students based on need and merit.

The Michelin Design Competition was launched in 2001 as a way to showcase creativity and innovation in vehicle design on a global scale around a central theme. Each year, Michelin invites designers around the world, from individuals to small and large companies, to create and display significant design work that would normally not have an opportunity to be shown at a major auto show.
