New compact SUV will go to market this fall

General Motors’ luxury division put on a soiree at its NY HQ on the eve of the start of the 2018 New York International Auto Show. The occasion? The global launch of the brand-new 2019 Cadillac XT4 crossover. The automaker is playing catch-up with others, such a BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi, all of whom already have their entrant(s) in the luxury compact SUV segment. Our Auto123.com contributor Denis Duquet was on site for the unveiling in the trendy Soho district of NYC, and we'll have a more detailed report from him later today! Meanwhile, here are the essentials on the XT4 for you:

The XT4 is built on an exclusive new platform on which sits an also-totally-new 2.0L 4-cylinder twin-turbo engine that can produce 237 hp. That engine is wedded to a 9-speed automatic transmission, and Cadillac is promising that this configuration will yield an impressive average fuel consumption figure of 7.8L/100 km.

The new XT4 also represents the debut of a new suite of trim features, simply called Y. Available on the Luxury, Premium Luxury and Sport variants, it includes sporty aluminum alloy wheels, gloss-black contours for the windows and a mesh grille that evokes the V series performance models. Luxury and Premium luxury versions, for their part, get a spiffier grille, aluminum window mouldings and chrome-accented door handles.

This offering of trims will also be available for the various versions of the 2019 CT6 sedan.

Cadillac points out that the XT4 offers more generous back-row space than any other in the category. In general, and unsurprisingly, the new crossover is aiming at a younger demographic than the brand traditionally leans to – an obvious step to take to ensure the continuing health of the Cadillac name. To that end, we can expect to see a steady flow of new Cadillac models and generations in the coming years – the company is promising one every six months from now until the end of 2020.

The 2019 Cadillac XT4 will be available to consumers as of this coming fall.
