The motoring world has been waiting endlessly for the production version of the 2009 Dodge Challenger, which was unveiled earlier today at the Chicago Auto Show.

Two years and much teasing after the concept first bowed at the NAIAS, the cover is officially off of the new model. Initial Challengers will be sold as SRT8 designated models with a 6.1 litre engine and 425 horsepower.

The Brampton-built muscle-coupe is going to sell for $37,995 USD- if you can get your hands on one. Dodge began taking orders in December, before the machine even began production, and thousands of copies were spoken for within the first 24 hours.

Largely responsible were enthusiasts who reached for their chequebooks before even seeing officially what the car would look like.

"The 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 offers pure American pony-car muscle," said James Press, Vice Chairman & President of Chrysler LLC. "With styling that stays true to Challenger's original heritage, an abundance of modern amenities and cutting-edge technology, the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 will deliver the SRT credo of benchmark performance at a tremendous value. We'll soon follow with a complete lineup of Challenger models that will offer a wide array of features and deliver outstanding value for our customers" he added.

If you've already pre-ordered your Challenger SRT8, you can expect it this spring. If not, you'd best make nice with your local Dodge dealership in a real hurry.
