A rumour has been circulating for several months about the reintroduction of the Taurus SHO to the Ford lineup. Well, after a 10-year absence, it's back. SHO, which stands for "Super High Output", is not a performance division like the SVT division, but the car will nonetheless be capable of some serious feats.

The Taurus SHOs of the 1980s and 90s were very dynamic sedans, but this time Ford is playing in the big league. The new SHO is based on the 2010 Taurus introduced at the Detroit Auto Show last January, which stood out as much by its style as its impressive overall quality.

The 2010 SHO has enough to fill many more expensive cars with envy. Ford has equipped the SHO with its latest engine technology: a 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 producing no less than 365 hp and 350 ft-lb of torque is hiding under the hood. That makes it one of the most powerful V6 sedans in the industry.

Power is dispatched to the pavement by way of an all-wheel-drive system, a six-speed transmission with paddle shifter and 19-inch wheels.

The automaker will officially launch the SHO at the Chicago Auto Show in a few days. After years of agonizing failure, Ford is now repositioning its mid-size sedan among the big names in the class. The wait will thankfully be short, as it will hit dealerships this summer.
