After much speculating about what suffix will be affixed to the ultimate Camaro, Chevrolet has finally decided on ZL1.

If you're a Camaro-phyle, you're well aware that ZL-1, back in the day, referred to the all-aluminum 427cu in (7-litre) big-block V8 offered as an option in 1969, of which only 69 were ever built. Putting out a pavement pounding 430 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, this was, yes was, the most powerful Camaro until now.

The new ZL1's monster-effin' hood harbours the Corvette ZR1's and Cadillac CTS-v's supercharged 6.2L V8. As Chevy put's it, the code-named LSA engine will produce an estimated 550 hp and equal amounts of torque. Ha! We love it!

Obviously, Chevrolet wants to keep Ford and its GT500 on edge as its supercharged 5.4L V8 puts out 550 hp. Being well aware that the CTS-v's got 556 hp and the ZR1, 638, the ZL1 will more than likely have as many as the v or a few more, just to piss off the crowd in Dearborn.

Important tech facts on the new ZL1 include the presence of a (oh joy!) 6-speed manual gearbox featuring a twin-disc clutch to harness all the power. The suspension consists of GM's Magnetic Ride Control with driver selectable settings. Essentially, the suspension components constantly adjust damping using a current to an electromagnetic coil to change the shock's fluid consistency; hi-tech stuff.

Brembo brakes will put a stop the ZL1's momentum. The front will depend on massive 14.6-inch (370 mm) two-piece rotors with six-piston calipers and the rear, gargantuan (for rear discs) 14.4-inch (365 mm) rotors with four-piston calipers; serious stuff.

Electric power-assisted steering will make the 20” wheels shod with specifically developed Goodyear Supercar F2 tires turn. On the topic of aesthetics, the ZL1's body will be enhanced with numerous aerodynamics including extractors, diffusers and spoilers.

The car is not yet ready as GM engineers are still working on the beast. The car is expected to officially arrive early on in 2012.

Incidentally, both GM and SLP have agreed to share the ZL1 name and the deal is explained in this statement.
