A declining market manufacturers are trying to rejuvenate

Every one of the last few years has seen sales of the midsize car segment decline in North America. The category has been the victim largely of the phenomenal growth shown by the compact and midsize SUV segments, which along with the luxury compact sedan category have picked off large numbers of consumers. 

Seeking to bring back vitality to the midsize sedan market, manufacturers have been working to introduce models that are more seductive and offer a more inspired driving experience, without sacrificing comfort and space, two elements that have traditionally been trademarks of these cars.  

Another noteworthy trend that is shaping up on the horizon is the proliferation of hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, as well as the introduction of “fastback”-type 5-door models that combine the practical aspect of a family car with the allure of a coupe.

Chevrolet has kept the Malibu in its lineup, and while the model is interesting in and of itself, it’s the hybrid version that truly grabbed our attention. We drove it this past winter and registered impressive fuel consumption figures of around 6.0L/100 km.
