Toyota will replace the CVT free of charge, but the work could take up to 10 hours

When people consider vehicle reliability, Toyota is invariably the first name that comes to mind – and with good reason. Countless surveys and studies have proven and re-proven the automaker’s bonafides in this area. Nobody’s perfect, however: Toyota has had to issue a recall of its new 2019 Corolla Hatchback over a not-insignificant problem.

The recall affects versions of the model equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The torque convertors of these CVT are prone to breakage, which would lead to a full loss of power to the wheels of the vehicle.

"Loss of motive power while driving at higher speeds could increase the risk of crash."

- Toyota statement

Some 3,400 2019 models are affected. Toyota service centres will replace the transmission in a procedure that’s free of charge but will require up to 10 hours to complete. The manufacturer is currently awaiting delivery of new components, and expects to start contacting owners as of mid-February to have the work done.

For the moment we don’t know how many vehicles in Canada are affected. You can contact your Toyota dealership or Toyota Canada to obtain more detailed information.

We will of course provide you with more information as it becomes available concerning the recall in Canada specifically.
