The Toyota Prius c got a positive reception when it debuted in 2013. Instantly becoming the most affordable hybrid car on the market, it made owning a super fuel-economical car accessible to shoppers on a budget.
Fast-forward six years, and Toyota was faced with the decision of renewing the aging product or sacrificing to make way for others.
When the hybrid version of the Corolla debuted at the last Los Angeles Auto Show, you could say the writing was on the wall for the little Prius c.
Its demise has now been quietly confirmed. Toyota VP of marketing Ed Laukes said this to Motor1 magazine:
"You're probably not going to see Prius C for long. The Prius C has served its purpose well."
Toyota feels that with its Corolla Hybrid it can reach an even wider audience, one that might be hesitant to fork over money for a car carrying the Prius nameplate but has no problem doing so for a Corolla.
What’s more, technology has evolved so much since 2013 that the new hybrid Corolla puts up better fuel-economy numbers than the Prius c. The former has an official rating of 4.5L/100 km, while the latter uses on average 5.1L/100 km.
