Volkswagen will have at least three ID electric models on the market by 2022

As we hit the month of November, for the automotive industry that means the Los Angeles Auto Show is imminent. Gradually we’re starting to get a picture of what the automaker have in store for the event. Today we learned that Volkswagen will be presenting another new electric concept under its ID banner.

VW intends to roll out a full range of ID-badged EVs in the coming years. Already the ID. 3 compact hatchback – essentially a Golf made electric - is in production for the European market.

The company has not revealed which ID concept it will roll out in Los Angeles, but speculation is it will be an evolved version of the ID Vizzion prototype first presented at the 2018 Geneva auto show. This is a full-size sedan and the model would take its place at the top of the ID roster, a bit like the successor to the Phaeton of 10-15 years back. Commercial launch for the model is expected to happen in 2022.

Before that happens, though, we’ll see from VW another small SUV, the ID. 4, which is expected to go into production next year. It will be followed by the highly anticipated modern electric interpretation of the company’s famed Microbus. This last could, in our view, cause a stampede to dealerships and become one of the most popular new models of the next decade – as long as Volkswagen cut too many of the good parts from the concept version we’ve already seen, and manages to keep the price reasonable.

Stay tuned for our comprehensive coverage of the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 20 and 21; we’ll be on site for all the festivities and reveals!
