Volvo has been studying the premium sedan buyer, and their vehicle development group has given the 2010 S80 some styling and engineering changes based on the results. The automaker will offer their flagship sedan with some revised interior and exterior elements, as well as two new chassis options.

Fans of the S80 will notice a new grille and badge treatment, alongside new bright accenting on the air intakes, under the taillamps and on the lower part of the doors.

Inside, new leather trim covers the seats and door panels, while the signature thin, floating centre stack gets a new metal frame to reinforce its unique and exclusive look. The interior is rounded out with new instruments and a new-generation steering wheel whose trim effect is repeated in the gear-shift surround.

"It is the combination of a number of carefully thought-out details that together creates the overall aura. The seats are a good example. Here we have focused on comfort by creating unbeatable seating and side support, accentuated further by the superb quality of the soft Scandinavian hide," says Steve Mattin, Volvo's design director.

Underneath the S80, Volvo will now be offering a standard, comfort-oriented suspension layout or a new lower, more dynamic sport suspension. The optional sport suspension features revisions to the sway-bars, bushings, springs, shocks and even steering to achieve a higher degree of driver involvement, and Volvo's suspension levelling system is standard.

"One chassis has now become two," says Stefan Sällqvist, Volvo's director of Vehicle Dynamics. "This means we do not have to compromise, while at the same time giving our customers added choice. We have one chassis for those who really enjoy an active driving style and another for those who simply enjoy a sumptuous ride".

The updated S80 will appear at the Geneva Motor Show next week, with pricing announced closer to its on-sale date later this year.
