Though we all love the spring with its warm weather and melting snow, it’s the worst season for your windshield. Rocks and various debris accumulate on the side of the road and increase the risk of damage. Drivers have to be particularly be careful at this time of year and should, if at all possible, avoid dirty streets.

Obviously this is easier said than done, like wrapping your car in its own protective bubble. Try to avoid following trucks hauling earth or building materials, as they are most often responsible for the flying debris that damages window real estate.

If you’ve run out of luck and a crack has developed in your windshield, you’ll have to get it fixed by a professional as quickly as possible.

The vibrations created on the drive and the subwoofers as well as differences in temperature can all transform the tiniest speck into a gaping, ever-expanding crack. The situation can quickly deteriorate if you don’t look after it and end up costing a lot of money.

Unfortunately, some drivers only look at the location of the crack to decide if they have it fixed it or not. Even though it’s very small, chances are you’ll have to look through it at some point. If it impairs your vision in the slightest, it represents a safety risk for your and others.

When a child, small animal or debris suddenly appears in your path and you need to execute an emergency manoeuvre, reaction time is crucial. Visibility plays as much of a key role here as a proper driving position, quality tires and a well-maintained vehicle.

So fixing your windshield is undeniably important. If you have a busy schedule and can’t find the time to go to the repair shop, several companies offer mobile units. Depending on the extent of the damage, the problem can be fixed in a matter of minutes without you having to lift a finger.

Some insurance policies (in certain provinces) will cover the repairs without increasing your premium.

Before you give your insurance agent a call, though, know that if you have any other mishaps that lead to repairs, the insurer could use the free claims you filed in the past years to justify a hike in your premium.

Depending on your situation, sometimes it’s better to pay the mechanic out of your pocket than to be stuck with a premium increase that can prove a lot more expensive in the long run. And, unfortunately, accidents happen quickly.
