7 This weekend’s race will mark the 46th edition of the Canadian Grand Prix. The first race was held in 1967 on Mosport Park near Toronto.
6 During the 1977 race was held at Mosport, British driver James Hunt crashed his McLaren and exited his stricken race car. A race marshal, named Ernie Strong, grabbed his shoulder to pull the Brit to safety and Hunt punched him in the mouth! 5 In October 1978, Gilles Villeneuve, driving for Ferrari, won the first F1 Canadian Grand Prix ever held on the Ile Notre-Dame in Montreal.
4 Jacques Laffite won the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal from the lowest spot on the grid. Laffite won the (very) wet 1981 race after he started from 10th on the grid in his Ligier-Matra. 3 The circuit was laid out on the Ile Notre-Dame, a man-made island, which was built to host Expo 1967. Roger Peart, the president of ASN Canada FIA, designed the original layout. 2 Six drivers have taken their maiden F1 win in Montreal: Gilles Villeneuve (1978), Thierry Boutsen (1989), Jean Alesi (1995), Lewis Hamilton (2007), Robert Kubica (2008) and Daniel Ricciardo (2014). 1 In 1978, the track was 4.5km long. Jean-Pierre Jarier clinched pole position in 1m38.015 in his Lotus-Ford. Today, the track is 4,361km long. Ralf Schumacher, driving for Williams-BMW, set the fastest lap in 1m12.275 in 2004. |
