We take you to Michael Waltrip Racing's impressive race shop located in Cornelius, N.C. where we recently witnessed Ryan Truex's pit crew in action, rehearsing the pit stop procedures during two full hours.
Six crew members are allowed over the wall per NASCAR rules. An average efficient pit stop that consists of changing all four tires and a full tank of fuel can take anywhere between 13 and 15 seconds. The jack man operates a 20-pound hydraulic jack that is used to raise the car. The tire changers remove and replace the Goodyear tires using an air-powered impact wrench to loosen and tighten the five lug nuts. The gas man empties two 12-gallon (81 pounds each) dump cans of Sunoco Green E15 fuel into the car's fuel tank. Every move is carefully choreographed as just one small mistake or hesitation will translate into the loss of several positions out on the race track.
