Dominating Win Sends Harvick to Next Round of Chase
Responding in style to the pressure of a must-win situation, Kevin Harvick led for 355 laps of the Chase playoffs race at the Dover International Speedway on Sunday and took the checkered flag to qualify for the 12-driver second round of NASCAR’s year-end playoff series. The defending Sprint Cup champion joins Matt Kenseth and Danny Hamlin of Joe Gibbs Racing, who had already qualified previously. The 55-year-old driver was offering passengers a ride in his car for a local charity when he lost control of the car, sending it crashing into an area where onlookers were gathered. 25 people were injured, including five people listed in critical condition in hospital. The season saw the team record an unprecedented 16 wins and Lewis Hamilton take the individual drivers’ championship. Much of the losses are being attributed to higher bonuses paid out due to on-track success, and ot increased costs due to changes in regulations imposed by F1’s regulatory body. Max Verstappen, veteran of 14 Grand Prix races for the Toro Rosso F1 team, celebrated his 18th birthday this past week by taking – and passing – his driver’s licence test. The first 17-year-old pilot in the history of the Formula One circuit was not until now able to drive himself to the practices and races in which he drove multi-million dollar cars at incredibly high speeds, but the Dutch racing phenom passed his driving exam on the first attempt, despite claiming to be nervous about making mistakes.
