Hamlin Takes First Chase Race
Denny Hamlin overcame an early spin to take the first race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup at Chicagoland on Sunday. Hamlin overtook race leader Kurt Busch following a late caution, during which both drivers stayed on the track with used tires while others pitted to change. Hamlin’s win and Carl Edwards’ second-place finish gave Joe Gibbs Racing a happy one-two podium ending to the race. The Chase continues next weekend at the Sylvania 300 in New Hampshire. Motorsport.com reports that the holdup to a move remains the uncertainty surrounding a possible Renault takeover of the Lotus team. Grosjean now is believed to have a deal in place with Haas, as part of a larger agreement between Haas and Ferrari, with a potential spot for Grosjean at Ferrari in 2017 in play. The two Toyota drivers dueled hard over the last few laps with the lead exchanging hands more than once, but Busch took the lead for good on the penultimate lap before taking the checkered flag ahead of the disappointed Kenseth.
