Hyundai wants to defeat Volkswagen as soon as its the new generation i20 WRC rally car is ready.
It's the reason why the new car has not been launched yet. "When we bring the new car, we want to beat our competitors - or should we say competitor, as we are already ahead of the Citroen and Ford with our current car," team manager Alain Penasse told Autosport. "It doesn't make sense to bring the new car unless it's a Polo-beater," he added. Hyundai, which is currently second in the championship standings, 24 points behind Volkswagen, expects to launch the new i20 this summer, in Germany. Toyota aiming for victory Meanwhile, Toyota, which will be returning to the WRC in 2017 after a break of almost two decades, confirmed it was targeting a rally win in its first season back.
"We want to be a title contender as soon as possible - as a motorsport organisation this is what your aim is," Toyota Motorsport’s vice president Rob Leupen told WRC.com. "But we have a lot of respect, especially for Volkswagen, at the present moment. I think if we are on a podium and with a win in 2017 that would be a good achievement." Recent Articles
