Futuristic Styling and Functional Size

Chrysler's Intrepid, launched in 1992 as a 1993 model, marked a significant move forward in design and driving dynamics for the penta star brand.

Leaving behind the boxy K-car derived Dynasty, Spirit and Acclaim models, Chrysler looked to the future with a unique cab forward architecture that not only was revolutionary from a styling perspective, but offered a dramatic improvement in interior roominess.

The result was strong sales, helping to increase Chrysler's profile and profitability in the important midsize sedan segment (it should be said that the new model was rated as a large sedan). No domestic competitor had anything that looked as futuristic, offered as much interior room, or drove as well.

To clear up some confusion in the Canadian market, the Intrepid has always been branded as a Chrysler here at home and a Dodge in the U.S. The Concorde, that shares the LH platform, was designed for Chrysler dealers in the U.S. and therefore came to Canada as a Chrysler.

Chrysler also offered the LHS luxury model based on the same platform, but with a longer wheelbase, more luxurious appointments, a classic waterfall grille and a more formal roofline. Also concurrently available was the Eagle Vision, the sportiest looking of the group with decidedly European overtones. It subsequently was discontinued along with the Eagle brand in 1998.

The LH cars handled corners well, due to an independent front and rear suspension system and power assisted rack and pinion steering, which integrated its gear unit above the transaxle, behind the engine and in front of the firewall. It was this last component that caused many of the LH platform's problems, such as looseness, wandering, bushing failure, tie rod separation, premature component wear and other steering related issues.
