New Mitsubishi warranty not offered in Canada

Mitsubishi Motors North America will not give Canadians the five-year/100,000-km ''bumper-to-bumper'' new vehicle limited warranty that it has given to its U.S. customers.

The new warranty is part of the troubled Japanese firm's efforts to reduce its huge sales slide by claiming that it sells the ''best-backed car.''

According to Ian Beavis of Mitsubishi's office in southern California, ''We now have the best-backed products in the industry,'' but of course that applies to the U.S., not Canada. In Canada that honor goes to either Hyundai or Kia, depending upon how you view their offers. Either way, they are superior to what Mitsubishi offers its Canadian customers.

If you look at the sales numbers, Mitsubishi is doing slightly better in Canada than it is in the U.S. because its monthly decreases are smaller on a percentage basis. But then the company has been operating fairly successfully in the U.S. for some time. It's only been on the Canadian market for about two years and is still far below its projected sales volume.

Since DaimlerChrysler declined to put more money into the Japanese firm, Mitsubishi has been on a continuing downward spiral.
