The Falcon XR6 could go LPG under plans being looked at by Ford.

Gas-powered sports and luxury Falcons are being considered by the company as petrol prices remain above $1.20 a litre. Sales of E-Gas Falcons - currently only available in base XT and Futura variants - are up 40 per cent in September compared with earlier this year. In contrast, overall Falcon sales of 3900 cars in the month were at a historic low. Ford President Tom Gorman says the company could not predict where petrol prices would settle but dedicated LPG Fairmonts and XR6 sedans were options if demanded by customers.
"We haven't made a decision but in the past four or five months we've been looking more closely at E-Gas XR6 and E-Gas Fairmont," Gorman says. The non-turbo XR6 has proven popular with private buyers since the introduction of the BA model, now making 20.5 per cent of total Falcon sales, compared with 4.5 per cent four years ago. The base XT makes up 51 per cent of Falcon volume for the year to date. The E-Gas XT has a $1400 price premium on the petrol car. At current petrol and LPG prices Gorman says the LPG option pays for itself within 12 to 14 months.

Unlike the petrol Falcon, the LPG Falcon is not available with traction control or dynamic stability control because of the different calibrations required with the E-Gas engine.

Gorman also says an LPG-powered Ford Territory is much less likely. He says there has been greater interest in LPG in recent months but denies gas will replace petrol on a large scale in the foreseeable
