Chinese auto-parts supplier is negotiating with Delphi Corp. to acquire some of the company's assets in the United States, according to the trade publication Automotive News.
The publication said Wanxiang Group, which posted global revenue of $2.6 billion in 2004, owns stakes in six U.S. manufacturing companies and wants to become a Tier 1 supplier to the major U.S. auto manufacturers. The company makes universal joints, brake disks, bearings, driveshafts and other products. The article does not say what Delphi assets the Chinese company wants to buy.
Delphi, which employs about 750 in west Columbus making safety features and interiors for automobiles, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October. The Troy, Mich.-based company is seeking concessions from the United Auto Workers union as well as General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - News), its largest customer. Delphi was spun off from General Motors in 1999.
