En exemple justement publié auajourd'hui;

Well, after heaping praises of my car's trouble-free ownership, the following happened.
My wife and I were on our way to see a relative in Brooklyn Saturday afternoon. Just before crossing over the Verrazano Bridge from Staten Island, I push the gas just a tad to pass a car, and holy %##%, all of a sudden there is a slight loss of acceleration and then a very loud noise like the muffler fell off. I pull over to the emergency lane. Now I'm no mechanic, but it seems to me that some kind of separation occurred at the exhaust manifold. One of New York's Finest saw us in the emergency lane and asked what the problem was. I explained to him my car's issue and he told be to follow him so that we could exit the roadway through an emergency access gate that was located just before crossing over the bridge. The gate existed right to a residential area in Staten Island. The car was able to start and run without a problem, it was just very loud. And NO CEL was shown on the MFD!!

So I didn't want to try to drive back to my home in south Jersey, and possibly do more damage to the car, I called the VW Roadside folks and they sent a tow truck which arrived in about 2 hours. Besides being upset about the car having issues, the VW Roadside assistance company only has a contract with Enterprise Car Rental, which unfortunately in the entire Staten Island area, closes for business on Saturday's at 12 noon. By that time it was 3PM.
So my wife and I had to call a cab to Newark Airport, a $40 expense, so that we could rent a car to get back home. And another setback was that Enterprise does not have a rental agency at the Newark airport. So we went to Hertz and got a small discount because my car insurance is through USAA. So VW will be owning me some cash back for my taxi fare and my Hertz car rental.

Now, where should I have my car towed?? The nearest VW service department was either in Brooklyn, about 5 miles or so (across the Verrazano) or in Linden, NJ, about 10 miles. I decided to have the car towed to Linden, which is just a tad closer to my home and in NJ. The only problem was the Linden VW dealership's service department closes their parking area (which I assume is fenced) at 4PM on Saturdays. And if my car was going to get there later than 4PM, the car would be parked on the street. The service person told me that no way would he leave his car in that part of town parked on the street over night.. thru Sunday to Monday. Well, no way was the car going to get towed there before 4PM, so my car is at the towing service's lot and will get towed to the Linden VW dealership Monday morning. The tow service driver said that their lot is well protected, so my car would be safe.

You would probably ask me if I got any indication whether my car showed any problems prior to the incident? Well I did hear some slight noise like what I would say sounded like air escaping from my engine area. But it only was heard when I hit the gas with some gusto and if I had the window open. During normal gas peddle use, nothing was heard and nothing felt strange as far as engine performance. I did not smell any exhaust fumes either. Hmmm, I thought to myself, I better get this checked out on Monday none the less. But, alas, fate stepped in.

Also, there was absolutely no CEL indications of any kind, prior to or during this exhaust issue happening. Now that was strange!!!! I had no blinking nor steady lit CEL. If I had a blinking CEL, I would have did a quick pull over to the emergency lane for sure. Now if a blinking CEL occurred and I didn't notice it (no way, since I usually check/glance at my MFD often while driving) and it went out for some reason, well that is poorly designed warning indications for a driver.

What was funny, to me anyway, was the tow truck driver's advice to me after he got my car on the flatbed. He said, "get rid of it." Not sure if he has issues against German cars or just him voicing his real-world experience. He said the VW, Audi, and one other car maker are just prone to more problems requiring his services. I had to chuckle at his comments and thought about my brethren and sistren here on the vortex forum explaining their B6 issues and the VW servicing issues....

Chapeau BMW !!!

What is going on with the B6 forum?
In reading through the posts, there are quite a few members who are now walking away and trading in for other makes of vehicles.

Is the car really that problematic?

I'm afraid we're walking because we have had enough hassle; personally I can no longer afford the time away from my business. I need a car that is reliable

Picked her up from the dealership, took her to a buddies house and removed the fog lights, clear turn signals, the subwoofer box, and the navigation unit. I had to install a deck in her and take her back .... I am gonna miss her, but gotta move on.
I told her good bye and gave the guy the key thingys

Now I have a few items to go post on the sales board ......

Thanks to everyone, it has been a lot of fun

I no longer have my B6 ... I loved the car, but it started having problems and I just didn't want to deal with it anymore...

Purchased my '07 Passat Wagon (2.0T) and brought it home this past Wed night. Started it for the first time on Saturday morning- drove 10 miles to Target. Shopped for 1/2 hour- came out and car didn't start. Wouldn't turn over - was towed back to VW thanks to Roadside Assistance (if only I knew I'd have to use it after 10 miles on my first ride). Dealer said they "think" this is a fuel pump. Anyone hear anything about this? Any idea of what I can do? Should I ask for a new car completely or wait for feedback after they "discover" what's wrong? thanks.

This may be my last B6 post; I've enjoyed the interaction with the community here, but I only found you all 'cause my B6 has been so much trouble.

Not that I am mad, but I haven't even made the 1st payment on this car yet...and it's on a flatbed to the dealer already. Miles on car 1,807.
On my way home from dropping off my youngest daughter at gymnastics; the car died....at about 30 mph while accelerating towards 45..... Filled up that morning, full tank...and it acted like it ran out of gas.

VW Roadside was very cordial, and apologetic. When they told me they were going to tow to the nearest dealer (who's known to suck), I told them I wanted it towed to the purchasing dealer, 25 miles further; and that I would pay for the difference/distance. I was told to hold, when the coordinator came back on, again she apologized and stated they would tow the car to the dealer of my choice, no charge.

So off it went.....I'll be calling in soon to let them know whats going on, and to pick up the loaner at lunch. I'm not mad per se, but I am concerned that a failure could occur so soon into ownership, as neither of my MKIV's had any issues at all...just recalls.

I'll post back when I hear what it is.

After the disastrous recall affair, today I note that the engine cover is broken loose and my MPG has been reduced by about 3MPG. I discovered it when I took my car in for a trade-in evaluation. I immediately drove next door to the VW dealership and looked a floor model to confirm. Yup - the cover is broken and loose and it seems I have a spare grommet-type part in my trunk. When my car broke down, I noted that the techs stored the engine cover in the trunk. Looks like they forgot to put in a part.
What can be said? I note that I'm not the only one that has befallen this issue. If a tech can't take off an engine cover, how in the blazes can they solve the complex technical challenges.

This is unbelievable. I don't know what else to say.

I know this subject was touched on in the "rattles are driving me crazy" thread but I was wondering if anyone has found a solid solution to the console and center dash creaks? Had my car to the dealer last week for this but it came back sounding the same if not worse. Going back on Monday to have them try again though they did say they might not be able to solve the problem. Very embarrassing to have people in your new car and it sounds like the interior is falling apart.

I have been following a few threads lately where a few forum members a disappointed by the quality/reliability of their B6 and went through with trading-in their car.
I am not quite sure of the geographical distribution of the problems, but unless I am mistaking, there seems to be more issues ( relatively speaking) with US-spec cars than Canadian-spec cars.
