Forbes has released its 2011 Worst Cars on the Road list, and the outcome is not pretty for American manufacturers. With the exception of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (http://www.autoblog.com/model/s-class), the 2011 Smart ForTwo (http://www.autoblog.com/model/fortwo) and the 2011 Nissan Titan (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/titan), the cars on the list are all American-made. Worse than that, they all come from two manufacturers: General Motors (http://www.autoblog.com/make/gm/) and Chrysler (http://www.autoblog.com/make/chrysler/). Ford (http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/) managed to avoid the list completely.

To determine which cars get the dubious honor and which don't, Forbes compiles results from six studies by Consumer Reports including the Most Reliable Cars Report, Best and Worst Safety Performance Survey, Best and Worst Fuel Economy, Highest Cost of Ownership, the Best and Worst Values Report and Consumer Reports' overall scores for new cars.

Chrysler made the list with the 2011 Chrysler Town & Country (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Town+and+Country), which racked up dismal scores for reliability and cost of ownership. Both the 2011 Jeep Wrangler (http://www.autoblog.com/model/wrangler) and the Jeep Liberty (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/liberty) made the cut, with the Liberty scoring poorly for reliability and fuel economy. The Wrangler joined the Liberty in the reliability department, and also ranked for worst value, and made a spot on Consumer Reports' Worst Cars list. The 2011 Dodge Nitro (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/nitro) and Dodge Dakota (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/dakota) made the list for similar reasons.

The picture is almost as bleak at GM, where offerings from Chevrolet (http://www.autoblog.com/make/chevrolet/) and Cadillac (http://www.autoblog.com/make/cadillac/) crowded the picture. The base model 2011 Cadillac Escalade (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/escalade) earned spots on the Worst Value, Highest Cost of Ownership and Worst Safety Performance lists. The 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe (http://www.autoblog.com/model/tahoe) Hybrid hung with the Cadillac for Worst Value and safety, and earned a spot on the Least Reliable roster as well. The Chevrolet Aveo (http://www.autoblog.com/model/Aveo) and Chevrolet Colorado (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/colorado) rounded out the worst General Motors offerings for 2011.

Though the results make it seem like General Motors and Chrysler still can't do anything right, there are plenty of vehicles from both manufacturers that didn't make the list. Added to that, luxury vehicles like the Escalade are at a disadvantage in the value and cost of ownership categories. Head over to Forbes (http://www.forbes.com/2011/04/13/mercedes-gm-chrysler-nissan-business-autos-worst-cars_slide_3.html) for further explanation on how the worst cars are weeded out.

Article du Forbes:

We should note that the Mercedes S550 is the only vehicle that qualified for our list because of a high cost of ownership, low fuel efficiency and a low rating for overall value, not because of any problems with reliability, safety or performance, which affected every other vehicle in the top 10. Indeed, luxury vehicles like that sedan and the Cadillac Escalade (http://www.forbes.com/2011/04/13/mercedes-gm-chrysler-nissan-business-autos-worst-cars_slide_2.html) are arguably at a disadvantage on lists like this--their luxurious interior upgrades, high-quality trim and powerful engines work against them.
"The worst value, the highest cost of ownership--you've got to remember there is a numerator and a denominator in these things," says Terry Woychowski, the vice president for quality and global launches for General Motors (http://finapps.forbes.com/finapps/jsp/finance/compinfo/CIAtAGlance.jsp?tkr=GM) ( GM (http://finapps.forbes.com/finapps/jsp/finance/compinfo/CIAtAGlance.jsp?tkr=GM) - news (http://search.forbes.com/search/CompanyNewsSearch?ticker=GM)- people (http://people.forbes.com/search?ticker=GM)). "To use an analogy of a watch: If you looked at dollars to buy a watch vs. accuracy of time, you'd probably buy a Casio. [Compare that] to the price and value in a Rolex--you'd say, 'Well, shoot. It costs so much!' For vehicles like this, it's an uphill battle."
We should also note that nearly every car or truck made today is safer, more efficient and more reliable than anything on the road even as recently as 15 years ago. But that doesn't excuse just how often vehicles like the Jeep Liberty (http://www.forbes.com/2011/04/13/mercedes-gm-chrysler-nissan-business-autos-worst-cars_slide_11.html) are panned for poor reliability or poor fuel economy--or both.
Jeep's Liberty and Wrangler (http://www.forbes.com/2011/04/13/mercedes-gm-chrysler-nissan-business-autos-worst-cars_slide_6.html) earned spots on Consumer Reports' Least Reliable list for 2011. The Wrangler also received Consumer Reports' Worst Value and Worst Cars distinctions, the latter of which is based on more than 50 individual Consumer Reports tests and evaluations. The Wrangler also appeared on our Worst Cars list last year (http://www.forbes.com/2010/04/07/worst-made-cars-lifestyle-vehicles-gm-ford-chrysler_slide_8.html)

Doug Betts, Chrysler's senior vice president of quality, says the Consumer Reports tests don't reflect the latest, most up-to-date vehicles the company is currently manufacturing. (Indeed, Chrysler's Town & Country minivan on our list is the 2010 model--Consumer Reports will complete testing of the updated 2011 version this summer.) The cars and trucks Chrysler has coming off the line now are far better than cars made even last year, he said in a statement about the reports.
"Customers will see 16 all-new or significantly updated vehicles at Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Fiat dealers this year," Betts said. "These vehicles represent a new level of interior refinement, world-class fit and finish and significantly enhanced driving dynamics."

Similarly, and despite significant improvements since hitting bottom in 2009, GM has some work to do before it can regain a good reputation fleet-wide. Four GM-made vehicles--the Cadillac Escalade (http://www.forbes.com/2011/04/13/mercedes-gm-chrysler-nissan-business-autos-worst-cars_slide_2.html), Chevy Tahoe Hybrid (http://www.forbes.com/2011/04/13/mercedes-gm-chrysler-nissan-business-autos-worst-cars_slide_3.html), Chevrolet Colorado (http://www.forbes.com/2011/04/13/mercedes-gm-chrysler-nissan-business-autos-worst-cars_slide_9.html), and Chevrolet Aveo/Aveo5 (http://www.forbes.com/2011/04/13/mercedes-gm-chrysler-nissan-business-autos-worst-cars_slide_10.html)--are ranked as among the worst on the market today. All but the Tahoe Hybrid qualified for the Worst Cars list last year (http://www.forbes.com/2010/04/07/worst-made-cars-lifestyle-vehicles-gm-ford-chrysler.html) as well.
"As our new vehicles come in, as we continue to launch vehicles, as we continue to do exceedingly better, I think the perception that we've noticed is already turning," Woychowski says. "I look forward to the next year or two when we continue this momentum to where it simply becomes a [good] reputation."

Woychowski expressed the same frustration with the ratings that Chrysler's Betts did. He noted a 45% reduction in GM-brand warranty repairs since 2007 and said cars like the Aveo won't be on lists like this much longer anyway.
"We get paid to get smarter every day," Woychowski says. "When we build that last Aveo, it will be the finest one we've ever made ... because the person who goes to buy this vehicle this afternoon, we want them to have the best vehicle we've ever produced."

Recall: 2011 Chevrolet Cruze - Steering wheel problem
Apr 8, 2011 5:30 PM
http://news.consumerreports.org/assets_c/2011/04/2011-Chevrolet-Cruze-recall-thumb-240xauto-299.jpg

General Motors is recalling 2,100 Chevy Cruze (http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/models/new/chevrolet/cruze/overview.htm) sedans from model year 2011, after a steering wheel on one vehicle came loose because it was improperly installed. If this occurred while the vehicle was being driven, it could lead to a crash. No injuries or accidents have been tied to the steering issue.
GM reported that it has inspected some 2,000 Cruzes at manufacturing plants but has not found similar problems. In March, GM issued a notice to dealers asking them to inspect unsold Cruze vehicles, according to the Detroit News.
Chevrolet Cruze owners will be be sent recall notices by mail on April 12. Affected vehicles can be brought to dealerships where they will inspect the steering wheel fastener bolt and repair, if necessary.
