Pontiac G6 sports sedan on sale this Fall!
Detroit, Michigan - Today, Pontiac revealed a sporty new mid-size sports sedan that's scheduled to replace the Grand Am in the Fall of 2004 as a 2005 model. The new G6 and G6 GT will be offered with a 3.5 litre V6 engine, rated at 200 horsepower mated to a four-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode. Later in the ’05 model year, the G6 GTP will debut with an all-new 240 horsepower 3.9 litre V6. The 3.9 litre V6 features variable valve timing and active air intake technology. Transmission choices will include a four-speed automatic with manual shift mode or an all-new, high-performance six-speed manual transmission.
For the 2006 model year, the G6 will add a 2.4-litre four-cylinder to its lineup. The all-aluminum, DOHC 16-valve "Ecotec" engine offers 170 horsepower and will be mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.
The G6 is built on GM’s global Epsilon platform, also used for the Chevrolet Malibu and Saab 9-3, and features a cross-car magnesium beam that results in class-leading bending rigidity. The G6's 112.3 inch wheelbase is five inches longer than other mid-size sedans resulting in a roomier passenger compartment and a comfortable ride.
“The benefit of the all-new architecture allowed a clean-sheet approach, enabling us to design a great looking, great driving car with outstanding performance, comfort and utility,” said Gene Stefanyshyn, GM vehicle line executive, midsize cars.
The car's unique proportions permits rear passenger windows that roll down all the way, and an optional "Panoramic" sliding roof - a four-panel, electronically operated glass roof. Three of the four panels slide rearward, creating a sunroof large enough for even the rear-seat passengers; the front panel tilts up as an air deflector.
The G6 will be available with optional remote starter; automatic climate control; premium Monsoon sound system with in-dash 6-CD changer, sub-woofer and steering wheel controls; personalized driver information center; and 60/40 rear-seat folding combinations.
