General Motors has confirmed that it will begin building a gasoline-electric hybrid version of the Chevrolet Malibu sedan at its Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kan., in 2007.
Designated as a 2008 model, it is expected to employ a belt-alternator-starter (BAS) system that adds electric-motor assist to GM's Ecotec four-cylinder engine.
A relatively simple system, compared to hybrids now on the market, it replaces the conventional alternator with a combined alternator/starter and adds a 36-volt storage battery.
Combined with an automatic start-stop system, which shuts off the engine whenever the car stops, the hybrid set-up will have the potential to reduce fuel consumption by some 10 per cent, the automaker says.
