(tout en bas de la page) un rayon de soleil dans cette mer de mauvaises nouvelles pour Mitsubishi, prions pour que la Colt soit disponible au Canada (et aussi la EVO).
Mitsubishi Europe has reported first-quarter sales up 29 percent on this time last year, and its best-ever March results. In the first three months of 2005, it has sold nearly 70,600 cars, with over 35,000 sold in March alone. Mitsubishi proudly claims also that "these sales were achieved without resorting to mass fleet channels such as daily rentals." Sales were up by 54 percent in Germany, which had been Mitsubishi's largest European market until the company's launch in Russia, where just under 12,000 cars were sold last year. The Lancer is the best-selling imported car in Russia, receiving the country's Car of the Year award this year, and Mitsubishi now outsells Toyota and Ford in the region. Sales rose by 20 percent in the UK, with the Colt the best-seller, though the newly-launched budget Lancer has outsold expectations with the first batch imported selling out within eight weeks. Results have also improved in Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Portugal.
This is great news for the company, whose survival was looking unlikely this time last year after DaimlerChrysler pulled out of its partnership and stopped its investment. A massive cost-cutting plan, which has seen factories closed and a comprehensive scaling-back of operations in some markets, has been necessary, and whilst Mitsubishi is still struggling in the USA and trailing in its home market of Japan, Mitsubishi Europe appears to have emerged from the doldrums, helped by a freshened product line-up - and particularly by the new Colt supermini.
Mitsubishi Europe is confident that sales will continue to increase, to a target of 260,000 cars this year, aided by the growing choice in the Colt range; three-door versions have just gone on sale, along with the 150 bhp sporty Colt CZT. A diesel version of the Grandis MPV will also be available across Europe from September 2005. The Colt coupe-cabriolet follows next year.
