Mitsubishi Motors North America has recalled about 3,700 of its 2006 Eclipse models for brake problems, the company said Wednesday.

Mitsubishi notified customers and dealers of the recall about two weeks ago when the company first reported it to the federal government, spokesman Dan Irvin said. He said most owners already have had their cars inspected and are back on the road.

The company found two instances in which a seal on the vehicle's brake cylinder was installed incorrectly at the supplier, which could cause a "spongy" feel when applying the brakes, Irvin said.

The recall was for cars built at the Normal plant between March 30 and June 10.

Mitsubishi began sales of the 2006 Eclipse last month. At the start of the rollout, the company issued a smaller recall for 57 vehicles, also for a brake issue.

Irvin said about 1,800 new Eclipse were sold in June, more than double the initial forecast of 800. He said employees have been working overtime this month to keep up with demand.

The factory, which employs nearly 2,000 employees, makes Mitsubishi's Eclipse, Galant and Endeavor models.
