    Thanks
English is not my native also but I feel more comfortable with English at this period of time.

If my French post was hard for understanding (at least I tried) I will write the same in English.

So I have to buy a first car in Canada. For the purpose of transportation of me, my wife and future baby in the city of Montreal.

Because currently I am not very rich I want to buy a used car. (To avoid dramatic decreasing of the car value, and to pay less for insurance.)

But because I do not have good knowledge in field of mechanics, I want to purchase a car with a dealer warranty for year or two. So because I need warranty I will have to buy a car from dealer even so I will probably pay little bit more than in case if I will purchase car from the private person.

So currently I need few advices:

1)Recommendations about dealers in Montreal, I found plenty dealers in the Internet but I don’t know nothing about they reputation. The one I liked the most is http://www.encandirect.com/ ( http://www.auto123.com/fr/community/...pic.php?t=5229 )
Can you advice me something at this matter?

2)Dealer warranty. Does this warranty worth the money that you are paying for it? It is possible to cover different parts of car. what parts you recommend to cover?

3)What Car. Currently I think about cars as: Hunday Elantra 2001; Hunday Sonata 2001; Mazda Protégé 2000-2001; Can you advice me what car to chose from these 3?

4)If I buy a car from a dealer with dealer warranty I have to take the car to the indipendent specialist check or I have to trust the dealer?

Thank you for reading all this

Welcome here, and welcome to our beautiful province! If neither French nor English is your mother tongue, where are you from?

Alright, let's look at your questions for now...

    1) Any single one of us here will tell you to stay away from places like Encan Direct H. Grégoire, Montréal Auto Prix, etc. There are issues against them like selling at a considerably higher price than announced and really bad stories on vehicles sold with major defects. Just search about them and you will see.

You can either buy your new car from a car dealer ( www.occasionenor.com ) or from a private party, a person who wants to sell his/her car on his own. However, it will be impossible to get a warranty from this kind of purchase.

    2) Well... Depends on what car you want to buy and on the price they are asking for it. Personally, I would not. Warranty will cover expenses related to defects, it will not pay for regular maintenance.

    3) Hyundai Elantra and Sonata are not in the same price/category range. It depends on what you want... Do you prefer a sporty car over something more comfortable? Do you prefer automatic transmissions or manual transmissions? And how much do you want to put on the car you will buy? That's the most important element of your question.

    4) Personally, I don't know...

Hi and welcome here (in this forum and in Quebec!)

I totally agree with Chang's statement. As for myself, I would never buy any car from a place like this.

If you're not in a hurry you should visit some dealers since they always have an used cars department. You may expect to pay a little more, but their cars are inspected and some will offer a warranty.

You should take a look for a used Ford Focus (2003). You can have a real deal since the resale value is quite low (good for used buyers)!

First of all, you should always have an inspection made before you buy a used car.

If you buy a warranty, the dealer will probably have the last word even if you have the car checked in an independant place. A good dealer will most certainly honor your warranty without any problems, so if you can have some references from friends, co-workers or people here, it would be nice. Also asks if there is a fee when you use your warranty, i.e. a 150$ charge for every job done on your car.

I hope it can be of some help for you and if you have any questions, don't hesitate, there's a lot of people here with a lot of knowledge and even wisdom (well, some of us ... )

    1) You better visit dealers around you than shopping from Encan Direct and the like.

    2) The dealer warranty is not worth it 95% of the time. You'll probably have a 3 month warranty anyway if you buy from a dealer, and it will be free.

    3) To tell you what car to get, we need to know what kind of car you want to drive and how much money you want to invest. Since you are low on money, better get something very reliable, like the Protegé with the manual transmission.

    4) You can probably bring the car to the independant dealer to check it, but most of the time, if you buy from a dealer, you'll get a 3 month warranty and the dealer have a reputation to protect, so they probably inspected the car very well. Encan Direct and the like have no reputation to protect and they already got a very bad reputation.

Thank you all for the answers. People are really kind here.

About the question from where I am, in general I am from Eastern Europe but last decade I have lived in the Middle East. So the North American automobile market is quite different from what I know.

    About what I need.
To be more specific I am looking for the family car, maximum that I am willing to pay is 10000 CAD in total, I am used to manual transmission. However after I will buy a car I cant permit myself a lot of spending each month (for insurance and for reparations). Also I have about until March to chose and to buy the car I need.
May be on the base of my needs you will give me some advice what to buy.

So I thought to buy car that will have a warranty on reparations(company warranty or dealer warranty) just to be covered..

I have additional question: when you say dealer you mean only the official dealers of Hundai, Ford etc. or you also mean the garage that sell used cars only?

Both. But generally, new car dealers selling used autos are usually better if you absolutely want a warranty. If you don't want a warranty, that everyone told you that it is not absolutely necessary, you can look on this website:

    www.hebdo.com

Most of them come from private owners selling their cars and used auto dealers. Be careful with the prices, you can negociate. For example, auto makes like Toyota, which has a very good reputation on reliability, are overrated.

But for a total of 10,000 dollars, you can have a rather recent and nice compact sedan with a manual transmission. I would suggest a Toyota Corolla. It's a bit more expensive in repairs, but it rarely ever breaks... The best choice if you want peace of mind. But as I told you before, BE CAREFUL with the price, as it is often way too up. For 10,000$, you can have a Corolla of almost any year and any total kilometres on it...

Considering the fact that you already mentionned Elantra and Protegé in your first post, we can see the kind of car you're looking for. For $10,000 you might find something interesting in those models and in an earlier year/model.

Personnaly, I'll prefer something more reliable than something more flashy. The Toyota Corolla Chang suggested is something very good. Avoid the 2001 to 2003 models.

If you have the time to visit many dealers, take a look at the Nissan Sentra and the Hyundai Elantra GT. Any Honda Civic under 2001 is also a good choice.

Compare and try them then come back to us and you'll find something suitable for you.

And you're most welcome. Just feel yourself at home.
