2005 Nissan Frontier is bigger and more capable than predecessor

Detroit, Michigan - A new Nissan Frontier pickup that's larger, more powerful and more capable was unveiled in Detroit on Monday. The third-generation Frontier, available in King Cab (extended cab) and Crew Cab models, shares a modified version of the full-size Nissan Titan's fully-boxed ladder frame. The 2005 Frontier's wheelbase is 9.8 inches longer than the current Frontier, which helps enhance ride comfort and stability. The overall length of 205.5 inches is also longer than the current model (+2.6 inches King Cab, + 5.6 inches Crew Cab). However, the 2005 Frontier is not as big as the full-size Titan.

The Frontier features a newly designed 4.0-litre DOHC V6 rated at 250-plus horsepower and 270-plus lb-ft of torque. These figures represent increases of 70 horsepower and 68 lb-ft of torque over those of the current normally aspirated 3.3-litre V6-equipped Frontier.

The new engine is part of the Nissan VQ engine series utilized in the Nissan 350Z, Maxima, Altima, Murano and Quest. A base King Cab model with an inline 4-cylinder engine also will be available.

The new Frontier will be offered with a choice of transmissions - an advanced 5-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission. Frontier 4x4 models include a shift-on-the-fly 4-wheel drive system with 2WD/4H/4LO modes operated by an electronically controlled part-time transfer case.

The 2005 Frontier shares its suspension layout and many component designs with Titan, including an all-steel double-wishbone front suspension and rigid leaf rear suspension.

The new Frontier includes a spray-in bedliner, and Utili-Track bed channel tie-down system, similar to those available on the Titan.

Like the previous generations, the 2005 Frontier will be assembled at Nissan's manufacturing facility in Smyrna, Tennessee. The Frontier King Cab and Frontier Crew Cab are scheduled to go on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide in Winter, 2004
