Most advertising or PR slogans are largely useless to the auto journalist or the prospective consumer, but every now and then one comes along that nails an automotive product exactly.

As an example of same, I refer you to the headline on the PR bumph for the Solara coupe and convertible: "Fun you can rely on."

Careful excitement. How Toyota is that? While this will make some risk-takers smile, it will make just as many people nod in satisfaction. Not everyone likes taking chances with a car, and for them Toyota is the holy grail of cars.

For 2002, Toyota Canada has revised the vehicles bearing the Solara name, with "dapper" appearance changes across the range, more power to the SE Coupe, and added luxury touches to the SE V6 Coupe and SLE V6 convertible.

The new look includes different headlamps, front grille and bumper cover, fog lights and tail lights.

The extra performance in the SE Coupe comes from an all-new 2.4-litre, DOHC, inline-4 that gets dual balance shafts and Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). As a result, it delivers 157 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, an increase of more than 20 horsepower over the previous engine, and 161 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm, delivered to the front wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission with an overdrive cancel swith and a lock-up torque converter.

The SE V6 Coupe and SLE V6 Convertible get a 3-litre, 24-valve, DOHC V6 that produces 200 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 214 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm.
