The new SLR Roadster's retractable top changes nothing to the car's performance and safety. Starting with an aluminium engine frame, its body is made entirely of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials, keeping the weigh of this super car way down.
The roof, which is available in three different colours, is composed of newly developed materials. They guarantee perfect suitability for everyday use in all weathers and allows the Roadster to keep all the coupe's impressive performance abilities including a 332 km/h top speed. Amazingly, normal conversation is still possible at speeds well over 200 km/h on a top-down cruise thanks to the favourable aeroacoustics. The roof opens or closes in less than ten seconds. All that is required to open the roof is to unlocked it from the windscreen frame and be pushed upwards, after which it folds away electrically.
The new Mercedes-Benz SLR Roadster is assembled at McLaren's Formula 1 factory in Woking, England, along side the Coupe. The Roadster will be available as of September 2007.
