Toyota is going back to their roots with an interesting new concept compact truck called the A-BAT. Interesting name, but what's more interesting is the way the machine combines environmentally advanced operation, modern versatility and a sense of roominess within a compact architecture.

A-BAT was developed by Toyota's Advanced Product Strategy group alongside Calty, the automakers Calfornia-based research and design centre for North America. After identifying a unique buyer who requires a vehicle that's not currently available, Toyota created the concept to be economical, functional, uniquely styled and durable. This positions A-BAT squarely at a young and active marketplace.

Positioned under the Tacoma, A-BAT is built from a unibody platform for a car-like ride. Power comes from Toyota's green Hybrid Synergy Drive system, and there are roof-mounted solar panels within the translucent glass top to help provide juice.

That's important, as the A-BAT carries some interesting electronics for work and play. For instance, its seven-inch display screen can be used to browse the internet, and a hard drive system is used to store music. A portable power pack is included, and can run some small appliances or boost a dead battery.

"Driving from beyond the suburbs to the city is a way of life for many people," said Kevin Hunter, president, Calty Design Research, Inc. "We've taken Toyota's truck heritage to a different level by envisioning a vehicle capable of maneuvering the suburbs as well as dirt roads. This compact truck is as comfortable for long commutes as it is for road trips. It can accommodate outdoor toys and home improvement supplies. Plus, customers benefit from the hybrid powertrain's low emissions and fuel economy."

A-BAT will be on display at the Toyota exhibit in Detroit at the 2008 North American International Auto Show beginning Monday, Jan. 14.
