Don’t miss the Vancouver Olympic Games if you want to catch a glimpse of the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid! While General Motors is busy developing a "parallel"-type hybrid variant of this midsize sedan for the 2011 model year (rumor has it the car could also be a plug-in hybrid), the bankrupt automaker announced in June that the few 2010 models being produced would find their way into vehicle fleets across the continent.
However, this production will essentially remain confidential. According to Robert Pagé, spokesman for GM in Quebec, 732 units are intended for American fleet managers, while an additional 332 will be supplied to the organizers of the Vancouver Olympics. Do the math, and you’ll realize that only 1,064 copies of the 2010 Malibu Hybrid will be manufactured! GM Canada is a major sponsor of the next Winter Games. "Our presence at the Olympics will be significant," claimed Adria MacKenzie, who spoke on the company’s behalf in Oshawa. "We’re going to supply a very large number of vehicles for the Games, 30 percent of which will be hybrids or other environmentally-friendly models." GM will seize the opportunity to allow spectators to try out the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell Concept, which is powered by hydrogen. "We also hope to be able to showcase the highly-promising Chevrolet Volt during this global sporting event. It’s still too early for us to confirm that it will attend the Vancouver Olympics, though," added Mrs. MacKenzie. The Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid was introduced in 2008 as a "series"-type hybrid (also known as "mild hybrid"). The electric motor is paired with a small-displacement gasoline engine to provide extra power under acceleration.
