Frankfurt 2015: All-new BMW 7 Series makes public debut

By ,

The all-new 2016 BMW 7 Series made its first public appearance at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show. This came after a private unveiling in Florida back in April and an online reveal in June.

The sixth-generation BMW 7 Series is more elegant than ever. Notice how the front grille is larger than the outgoing model’s, and features active shutters that can open or close when necessary (a BMW first). The Carbon Core body structure, borrowed from the company’s i3 and i8 cars, contributes to a 130kg weight reduction.

Powertrain options include:

  • 450hp V8 engine with all-wheel drive (750i xDrive, 750Li xDrive);
  • 326hp 6-cylinder engine (740i, 740Li);
  • 265hp 6-cylinder diesel engine (730d, 730Ld, 730d xDrive, 730Ld xDrive);
  • 326hp hybrid system with 4-cylinder gasoline engine and electric motor (740e plug-in hybrid).

The last one provides an all-electric range of about 40 km and top speed of 120 km/h.

The new 7 Series features a wide array of premium amenities and safety technologies such an enhanced iDrive 5.0 infotainment system with touchscreen and gesture control, a panoramic sunroof, remote control parking (a world first), laser lighting (similar to the i8), auto pilot in traffic jams, whiplash mitigation, and much more.

Pricing and a release date for Canada have yet to be announced.
