7 – Chevrolet Equinox & GMC Terrain
The Chevrolet Equinox/GMC Terrain duo has never been more interesting, but the competition is just so tough in the category of compact SUVs that it’s hard for these GM products to make a mark. They’re also undoubtedly held back by the reputations they carry around from the days when their quality was sometimes dodgy. It’s called a credibility deficit…
For 2020, don’t go looking for the diesel versions, which have been removed from the product offering. If you like being different (ie not sitting inside the same model as countless other commuters around you), these are valid choices. Note that the Terrain from GMC sits in 10th spot for sales in the category, at 7,375 units sold in 2019 to date in Canada. The Equinox outpaces it with sales of 11,527 units. Ironically, the Terrain has actually seen sales increase this year, by 4.3%, while the Equinox is down by 15.2%.
From our review (of the Equinox):
“… the model as it exists now is a much less moribund affair than it was when it first debuted; back then it was frankly outclassed by most of its rivals. The current generation, in place for a couple of years now, even has many of the qualities and features that make the top-selling compact SUVs so attractive.”
From our review (of the Terrain):
“Beyond question, the GMC Terrain is a far better product than when it first hit the market. Is it now fighting on equal terms with the segment big shots? We’d have to say, not yet. But the gap has closed so much that we consider this SUV a good buy.”
