Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, test drives are cancelled at the last minute. And if a car isn’t available, we’re then offered a replacement vehicle. That's how I ended up with a Ford Mustang with a 4-cylinder engine and automatic transmission, a model I had driven very briefly during a launch in California in 2017.

My test drive this past summer confirmed what I had concluded back then: that the marriage is a bad one. A 4-cylinder for the Mustang might work with the manual transmission, but with the automatic? Nope.

And anyways, when it comes to the Mustang, it's the V8-powered GT that you need. For the sound, for the experience and for the resale value.

For me, this was a test-drive week that didn't go down as one of my most enjoyable.
