6 – Volkswagen Beetle Amphibious 1963

Volkswagen never actually produced an amphibious version of its Beetle, but that didn’t stop some enterprising owners from transforming their bug so that it could be driven on the road and piloted on he water. On June 17, 1973, Malcolm Buchanan made history by crossing the 59 km stretch of water separating the Isle of Man from Blackpool, England. The intrepid ‘sailor’ actually ran out of gas as he neared shore, but the current carried him the rest of the way.
