For more than 20 years, Rodgers was affiliated with the late Tony Bettenhausen source: CART.com INDIANAPOLIS--The sport of Champ Car racing lost another of its longtime friends when it was learned that Jack Rodgers had passed away here early Thursday morning after a bout with cancer. A native of Bellflower, Mo., he was 67. For more than 20 years, Rodgers was affiliated with the late Tony Bettenhausen and the CART team he formed that ultimately became Herdez Competition. In 1981, under the banner of H & R Racing, Rodgers and Wayne Hillis fielded a Champ Car team for Bettenhausen, whose father had been national champion in 1951 and 1958. A rookie, Bettenhausen piloted their Provimi-sponsored McLaren/Cosworth to seventh place in that year's Indianapolis 500 and a near-miss in the inaugural Michigan 500 where he wound up a close second to Pancho Carter. In all, Bettenhausen was running at the finish of nine of 10 races he started and he ended up sixth in the final CART point standings.
