Laguna Seca...the 'Corkscrew.' Shell-shocked, dumbfounded and awestruck source: paddocktalk.com "The Pass." Without having to read any further, you know exactly what race and what pass I'm talking about. The 1996 Toyota Grand Prix of Monterrey at Laguna Seca. The race that created a legend. The race that made everybody stand-up and take notice. The race that was the ultimate teaser as to what lay on the horizon...a pineapple's reign of terror. Nobody of course knew of the events that would unfold on that day. All attention was focused on Jimmy Vasser's, Michael Andretti's and Al Unser Jr.'s chase to clinch the 1996 PPG Championship. At times, Laguna Seca had produced races that were deemed as "processions." But that didn't stop a record crowd from showing up underneath perfect weather conditions. Alex Zanardi qualified on pole position with Bryan Herta filling out the rest of the front row. Mauricio Gugelmin and Mark Blundell occupied row two. Jimmy Vasser qualified fifth with Greg Moore beside him in sixth. Once the green flag dropped, Alex Zanardi began to pull away from the field. It looked as though another procession would be the order of the day. Fully establishing his intentions, Alex Zanardi opened up a 6.5 second lead.
