''I Really Want to Race Against My Son'' - Michael Andretti source: paddocktalk.com by Anne Proffit Marco Andretti spent the 2005 summer following his high school graduation learning the family business. He raced in the Star Mazda series against his peers (taking fifth in the final standings) and [essentially] cleaned clock in three of six Menards Infiniti Pro Series contests he entered (all wins on road courses). Marco spent the balance of summer holiday in the Andretti Green Racing pits, learning more about the Indy Racing League's IndyCar Series through his father Michael's team of four exceptional drivers: 2005 IndyCar Series champ Dan Wheldon, 2004 titleholder Tony Kanaan, 1999 CART runner-up Dario Franchitti and multi race winner Bryan Herta. Next season the third generation driver from America's Andretti family gets to move on up to the big time and contest the full 14-race IndyCar Series schedule. Andretti had his first licks behind the wheel of an AGR Dallara/Honda the day after the Michigan race, where Herta was the winner from pole. "I saw what Marco accomplished in the Menards Infiniti Pro Series," Michael acknowledged, "and thought he was impressive, race in and race out. He did a fantastic job his first time in the Indy car, was on pace quickly and gave great feedback right away." While Andretti had hoped to place Marco in a fifth AGR entry to keep the current team intact, when it became apparent 2005 Indy and series champion Dan Wheldon would not return, the strain of a 5th entry was no longer a hurdle to jump.
