The Red Bull Junior Team has chosen Robert as their Driver of the Week in recognition of his results at the inaugural Champ Car Atlantic race in Las Vegas. Robert won the pole, recorded the race's fastest lap and narrowly missed the win taking the second step of the podium in his very first race in the series. Robert now heads to Long Beach for round two of the Champ Car Atlantic series. source: redbull-juniorteam.com ChampCar Atlantic Championship, April 8th, 2007, Race 1 - Las Vegas, Nevada. ChampCar Atlantic rookie Robert Wickens (CAN) 2nd - John Edwards out early, after a spin and a collision (from 7th position). The winner: Raphael Matos (BRA) A total of 27 cars start in the ChampCar Atlantic Series 2007 - a series which is one step beneath the ChampCar World Series and has produced drivers such as Gilles and Jacques Villeneuve, Bobby Rahal or Paul Tracy in the past 33 years. Red Bull Junior Robert Wickens couldn't have had a better start of the season: The young Canadian qualified for pole position in the first race of the season in Las Vegas. His Red Bull Junior Team mate, 15 year old John Edwards - the youngest driver in the field - started the first race from 9th position. Unlinke in the ChampCar World Series, the drivers start from standing positions. Wickens had a good start and took the lead. Edwards made up one position but then dropped back two again and found himself on 10th position. After Adrian Carrio crashed, the yellow flag came out - after the re-start in lap 4, James Hinchcliffe passed Robert Wickens. Only a few seconds later, the yellow flag came out again - Edwards improved to 9th position and Wickens was put under pressure by Matos. The Red Bull Junior then started a manoeuvre that was well worth seeing: Wickens hit the brakes late and not only kept Matos behind him but also took back the lead from Hinchcliffe. Edwards was on 7th position at that time. The race was unfortunately interrupted again soon afterwards: Red Bull youngster Edwards span and caused a pile-up which made five cars break down and caused a long yellow phase. Wickens unfortunately did not manage to distance himself at the re-start and Raphael Matos passed the Red Bull Junior - there were 3 more laps to go, which included yet another pile-up. In total, approximately three quaters of the race were driven with the yellow flag out.
