The track was tricky as early afternoon rain showers made for a wet surface. As the session went on the track continued to dry but never enough for teams to mount slick Bridgestone tires. Team Australia's Alex Tagliani thrilled the hometown crowd with a stellar qualifying effort ending the session second fastest. Paul Tracy was third quick and Nelson Philippe was fourth fastest and Oriol Servia fifth.
