Sebastien Bourdais notched his 3rd win of the 2003 Champ Car season under floodlights in the Cleveland Grand Prix last night, celebrating his achievement with a series of spectacular doughnuts to the delight of the large crowd. CART's 22nd visit to Burke Lakefront Airport's 2.106-mile circuit next to Lake Erie saw a dogged fight between the Lola B2/00's of the Newman Haas driver and series points leader Paul Tracy. Bourdais' victory was the climax of a fierce battle between the two who proved to be the quickest drivers all weekend and who were who split by 2.241 seconds at the chequered flag. Bruno Junqueira finished 3rd in the other Newman Haas car, as a total of 8 Lola chassis led the rest of the field home. In the historic first night race of a major open wheel racing event, the lead changed only once in the pits on the third of four compulsory stops as Bourdais beat Tracy out on lap 68. "As the fuel went down the quicker we were," Bourdais said. "The race at night was fun and I'm just very proud to score my first win in the US. It was an awesome race. I think Paul and myself pushed as hard as possible, that means 100 percent and even more, all through the race." The Frenchman even survived a late race scare when lapping Portland winner Adrian Fernandez, when the Mexican turned in on him and contact was made at Turn 3. ""I have no idea what happened," Bourdais said. "I was on the inside and he lifted. Then suddenly he turned in and we touched each other."
