Following IndyCar warm-up accident in Homestad-Miami source: paddocktalk.com - (c) 2006 Anne Proffit Shortly before noon today, Paul Dana succumbed to multiple trauma injuries sustained in a warmup crash at 10:03AM on the 1.5-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway oval. Out of respect for Dana's wife Tonya and his immediate - and racing - family, Rahal Letterman Racing has withdrawn all three of its cars from this afternoon's Toyota Indy 300 presented by XM Satellite Radio. Dana, 30, a native of St. Louis was driving the #17 Ethanol Panoz/Honda/Firestone entry when he clipped the right rear tire of Ed Carpenter, who had hit the Turn 2 wall on his third flying lap of the session. The sixth driver to come upon the stationary Carpenter, whose Dallara drifted low on the track, Dana's vehicle was vaulted over that car and he came to an abrupt rest further down the track. The League indicated all communications procedures for caution periods occurred in a normal fashion. There are no immediate details about the extent of his injuries. Both Dana and Carpenter had been taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital by helicopter because that medical center is a recognized Trauma 1 facility. Carpenter is in stable condition at the facility. Paul Dana made his racing debut in the Bridgestone Racing School Mechanics Championship in 1996, earning two wins, three podiums and six top-five results. He took a single victory the following season in the Bridgestone Racing School Championship Series.
