A couple of years ago, Patrick Carpentier decided he needed to change his offseason hobbies and routines source: canada.com After breaking a collarbone in a mountain-bike spill, fracturing a wrist falling down stairs and getting a black eye from being struck by a flying champagne cork, he figured boating would be a nice, relaxing way to get away from things. The 43-foot Maxum yacht he bought never gave him any injuries, but it did give him headaches. As anyone who owns a boat knows, it's not all the kick-back-and-relax hobby it's cracked up to be. Carpentier found he spent far too much on Lake Mead, Nev., trying to keep the boat running. So he sold it. "I get a lot of work, rest and sleep compared to what I had before," he said. "I made the mistake of buying a big boat. I spent a lot of time with that where I should have been, I think, spending a lot of time preparing for the season. This year that's the only thing I got to do. I just go out and train and rest." So far, it's paid off. The 32-year-old Montreal native is third in the standings, the highest he's ever been this late in the season. "I'm more aggressive from the beginning to the end of a race this year," he said before flying from Las Vegas to Vancouver. "But I need to be a little bit better in qualifying. We're always starting back and fighting hard through the race. If I could put together a lap during qualifying, it would be great."
