Former Indy 500 winning teams Hemelgarn Racing and Red Bull Cheever Racing
have filed their entries for the 89th running of the Indianapolis 500.
IndyCar Series returnees and 1996 Indy 500 winners Hemelgarn Racing have filed a
singleton Dallara-Toyota for rookie driver Paul Dana while 1998 winner Eddie
Cheever has two Dallara-Toyotas for Patrick Carpentier and Alex Barron.
Teams wishing to enter the May 29th event have until April 6th to postmark their
entries. Team owners Cheever and Ron Hemelgarn become the second and third
entrants to officially file their entries after Panther Racing.
Despite nearly ten years of experience in Champ Cars, Patrick Carpentier is
officially an Indy 500 'rookie,' having broken in to CART in 1997, the first
year of the CART/IRL split.
Dana, who took a fortuitous top ten finish on his IndyCar debut last weekend at
Homestead, has one Menards Infiniti Pro Series win to his credit as well as MIPS
experience at the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway thanks to the Futaba
Freedom 100 event.
Barron will be attempting to make his fourth career Indy 500 start and maintain
his impressive top 12 streak at IMS. The San Diego native has finished in the
top 12 in each of his three starts, with a best result of fourth in 2002 when he
was named co-Rookie of the Year with Tomas Scheckter.
