Patrick Carpentier took the green
flag for the Tecate/Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix not sure he'd have the stamina
to finish, his prime objective being to score some points in the wake of a
disappointing eight place finish at St. Petersburg.
source: cart.com - David Phillips After all, he'd spent the better part of Saturday holed-up in his hotel room battling the mother of all colds after crunching the tub of his Player's/Forsythe Ford-Cosworth/Lola in practice when he couldn't focus his bleary eyes properly. Player's/Forsythe was so sure Carpentier wouldn't be able to race that they flew-in Max Papis from Miami on Saturday night to be available as a stand-in. But what a difference a day made. Carpentier arrived at Fundidora Park on race morning a tad on the weak side but raring to go, and promptly turned second quickest time in the morning warm-up. "My eyes are still watery and I'm a little weak," he had said after that morning session. "To do one fast lap is no problem but to run the race distance is something else. "I think today will be about collecting points." With five laps remaining Carpentier was poised to collect a lot of points, ten to be specific. Although teammate Paul Tracy, Michel Jourdain, Jr. and Alex Tagliani were well down the road, Carpentier was running in sixth just behind Adrian Fernandez and Bruno Junqueira.
