Helio Castroneves surveyed the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix race course map as event chairman Bud Denker explained several modifications planned for the IndyCar Series race on Sept. 2. source: indycar.com Castroneves, whose trademark victory fence climb was born in 2000 on the public park course, nodded his approval to racetrack widening and enhanced facilities for ticket-holders. "I think it will provide a better view for drivers, better sighting through the turns in that section," said Castroneves, who will be seeking his third victory at Belle Isle. "I think it will be a lot safer. The track will be challenging and difficult in areas to pass. But that's what makes things exciting." Castroneves, naturally, has been supportive of the plan to return major open-wheel racing to the Detroit River island. That his team owner, Roger Penske, was the catalyst to make it happen is gratifying. "Roger has been asking questions about what we can do, what we can try," Castroneves said. "I've been more than available because I want to make not only this race to be a great race, but I want to do well and I want the series to continue to grow." Teammate Sam Hornish Jr., who lives about 90 minutes south of Belle Isle, likes the idea of the IndyCar Series making two stops in Michigan. Drivers will compete at the 2-mile Michigan International Speedway on Aug. 5.
