The hurricane tragedies that caused great devastation throughout the Gulf Coast region rallied all parts of the United States to give aid to the stricken areas, and the Champ Car community immediately lent its support as well source: paddocktalk.com The teams, drivers, sponsors and promoters that make up the Champ Car World Series donated more than 100 items to an online auction that ended Tuesday evening, raising $22,290. All of those funds will go directly toward the relief effort, with 25 percent of the total coming in the form of infant car seats that will be donated through CARA Charities' Buckle Up Baby program, which gives car seats to disadvantaged families that need them. Champ Car fans responded in massive numbers to the 10-day auction, as 3,364 bids were placed on the list of items which included tickets and suite passes to events on the 2006 Champ Car calendar, autographed items of all kinds including race-worn gloves and firesuits, pace-car and two-seater rides along with VIP packages to series events which included hotel accommodations. "It is very gratifying to see so many people come together and lend their support to a great cause," said Champ Car President Steve Johnson. "It was great to see so many people from throughout the Champ Car community rally together and I am very proud of the effort that was made in helping the hurricane victims." The money raised in the auction will go to the Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund, along with funds raised over the past weekend as part of the Champ Car Hurricane Relief 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Champ Car proceeds from the race will be donated to the relief effort, along with funds donated by series presenting sponsor Bridgestone. In addition, series points leader and Las Vegas race winner Sebastien Bourdais (#1 McDonald's Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) donated the $5,000 that he earned for winning the Bridgestone Pole Award to the relief effort.
